The Pekingese Dog, one of the world’s most recognisable breeds, was once the sacred dog of China. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi was first developed in Pembrokeshire, Wales as an all purpose working and herding dog. It is thought that this breed is a descendent from Spitz-type ancestors and was brought to Wales by Flemmish weavers. Ye Olde Pocket Beagle, also known as the Miniature Beagle, the Toy Beagle, Teacup Beagle, or even the Queen Victorian Beagle, is a small dog whose history dates clear back into the 1300’s. In modern days, however, they are a dog that is threatened with extinction, having been replaced by larger, long-legged cousins and other toy breeds that are more frequently seen in the spotlight. Sadly, Ye Olde Pocket Beagle is rarely seen in the countries of his origin – England, Wales and Ireland, and only a few select breeders raise true examples of this amazing little breed.
Belonging to a group of dogs, known as the Spitz family, the Pomeranian is a descendant of working sled dogs from Lapland and Iceland. Surprisingly, however, he did not earn his name for the places that he originated but, rather, for the place that he was bred down into a toy size. Pomerania, now known as the present day Germany and Poland, made up the Baltic seas southern coast. It is here that the Pomeranian was bred down from his larger 20-30 pound size, and became the toy variety that we know and love today.
